He spent the last 20 years of his life in a small room in the university. He also refused to use the fan on his head as a luxury item. There was a rule in those days that when the teacher took the class, an employee would come and delete the blackboard, the table. One winter day, an employee came to wipe the blackboard after his coat. After a while, Prafulla Chandra Roy entered the class wearing a similar coat and later it was found out that he had made two coats from the same cloth, one for him and the other for that employee. ...
● Known Unknown Prafulla Chandra Roy: Chemist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy! How many of us know the name of this famous Bengali scientist who has heard the names of Dalton, Rutherford, Bohr, Avogadro since childhood? This great Bengali scientist was born on 2 August 181 in Ratuli village of Paikgachha upazila of Khulna. He is the son of mother Bhubanmohini Devi and father Harishchandra Roy. Harishchandra Roy was a local zamindar.
He started his education in the ME school established by his father in his village. Although he was a child of a zamindar dynasty, he had a very simple life. As a child, one of his hobbies was running away from school and sitting on the trunk of a leafy tree! In 182 he moved to Calcutta Hair School to study. But suddenly the physical condition deteriorated. He suffered from bloody diarrhea for 2 years. However, this disease brings blessings for him in another way. Prafulla Chandra writes in his personal diary about these 2 years, "Freed from school books, I had the opportunity to read books of my choice." During these two years, he was immersed in his father's huge collection of books. And acquired a vast body of knowledge on various subjects. Prafulla Chandra returned to Calcutta in 184 and was admitted to the Albert School.
It was from this school that he passed the first division in the entrance examination in 18. He then enrolled in the Metropolitan College (now Vidyasagar College) established by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. From there in 181 he passed the FA examination (Intermediate or HSC) in the second division and got admission in BA class in Presidency College. Alexander Pedler was a professor of chemistry at Presidency College at the time. Pedler was more concerned with the practical side of his teaching method than the theoretical side. He easily attracted his students with his fascinating experiments in chemistry.
Young Prafulla was his fascinated listener. The same experiments that Pedler used to do he would repeat the same experiments back home in his own chemistry lab. Basically, his love for chemistry started from there. Although his first love was literature. Following which he learned Latin and French at home. But later he decided to continue his studies in chemistry. He later moved from Presidency College to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland on an honorary Gilchrist Scholarship (only two graduates from all over India that year).
From there he took BSc and PhD degrees. The subject of his thesis was "Conjugated Sulfate of Copper Magnesium Group". He received the University's "Hope Award" that year for outstanding research and was allowed to do one more year of thesis. His classmates and teachers were so impressed with his depth of knowledge, responsibility, and good manners that he was elected vice president of the Chemical Society at the University of Edinburgh.
Such a rare instance of any student of the subcontinent surrounded by illiteracy and superstition really deserved praise at that time. Another incident of that time bears witness to the brilliance of Prafulla Chandra Roy. In 185, University Chancellor Sir Starford Northcourt organized an essay competition entitled "Movies of the Subcontinent Before and After British Slavery." Although he did not win a prize in the competition, his high-mindedness and straightforwardness impressed the judges. He also made arrangements for publicity in the media, a move that was really commendable in the early anti-British movement.
In 18 Prafulla Chandra returned to the country to promote education and research in his land. At that time the British created two separate levels for the teaching community. Imperial Service and Provincial Service. British teachers lived under the Imperial. They received high salaries and modern access to research. As a result, even after getting education in an institution like Edinburgh, Prafulla Chandra Roy joined the Presidency College with a salary of only 250 rupees. Another famous Bengali scientist of that time Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose was also a victim of the same discrimination. However, Prafulla Chandra did not stop, he accepted all the obstacles and started teaching.
He transforms limitations into strengths. He could experiment with chemistry with anything at hand and present it to the students in a captivating way. However, he realized that chemistry should not be confined to the classroom. It has to be put to use, it has to be researched. He knew very well that India's development would depend on future research. So he wanted to spread the seeds of research among the students. Who will represent the whole country. He goes on to say, “Good boys are like dolls. They have eyes, but they will not see. Have ears but do not hear. They have no personality, no identity of their own. They don't think about anything but them, they just imitate everyone. " So he didn't just want good meritorious students, he wanted a group of patriotic meritorious students. He gathered some selfless geniuses under one roof and formed a scientific team with them.
Many of the meritorious members of this group (Panchanan Niyogi, Neel Ratan Dhar, Priyada Ranjan Roy, Biresh Chandra Guha, SS Bhatnagar, etc.) later made great strides in scientific research all over India. At that time, Prafulla Chandra Roy himself published about 150 research papers on chemistry, 70 of which were published in the newspaper of the Royal Society of International Scientists. He discovered mercury nitrite (HgNO2) in 1895, which caused a worldwide stir. This is one of his major discoveries.
He discovered a total of 12 compound salts and 5 thioesters throughout his life. Prafulla Chandra left the presidency in 1918 and joined the College of Science. In 1921, at the age of 70, he dedicated all his subsequent salaries to the welfare of the university. From which 2 lakh Indian rupees are paid to fellowships under the university. Thus he has been teaching without pay till the age of 65 years. He spent the last 20 years of his life in a small room in the university.
He also refused to use the fan on his head as a luxury item. There was a rule in those days that when the teacher took the class, an employee would come and delete the blackboard, the table. One winter day, an employee came to wipe the blackboard after his coat. After a while, Prafulla Chandra Roy entered the class wearing a similar coat. It was later revealed that he made two coats from the same fabric, one for him and the other for that employee. He never spent more than 1 paisa on daily meals, but he did not hesitate to pay a thousand rupees if anyone asked for help. The words of poet Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi about him are significant ....
World poet Rabindranath Tagore has rightly said: “Acharya has established his own triumph in the field of enterprising life, not with stones, but with love. Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy is the pride of Bengalis, the pride of the world. His deeds will be flowing in the world forever. The Bengali nation will remember this great man with respect. " Gandhiji said about Acharya: “It was hard to believe that a man in plain Indian clothes, whose manners were more common, was in fact already recognized as a great scientist and professor.
I heard with a sigh that Acharya Roy kept a small amount of money from his royal salary for himself and used the rest for public welfare, especially to help poor students. This great servant of India has not changed a bit in these thirty years. We can certainly be proud of the example of non-stop service, enthusiasm and optimism that he has set before us. " This great scientist, who has excelled in science, country and people all his life, passed away on June 17, 1944 at the age of 63. Have we been able to give him the respect he deserves?
